Setting Up Markers

A marker is a shape that displays separate series points on a chart. Markers that correspond to the same data series, have identical formatting settings.

NOTE. Markers can be set up using the Data Series Format dialog box only in the desktop application.

TIP. To quickly set up series format, use the Data Series tab of the side panel.

To open the Data Series Format dialog box

To display markers on a data series, select the Display Markers checkbox on the Markers tab of the Data Series Format dialog box.

Select marker type in the drop-down list:

Square. Markers are shown as squares.
Diamond. Markers are shown as diamonds.
Triangle. Markers are shown as upward triangles.
Inverse Triangle. Markers are shown as downward triangles.
Circle. Markers are shown as circles.
Line. Markers are shown as dashes.

The example of displaying different types of markers is given below:

TIP. To quickly change markers display or markers type, use the Markers button in the View group of the Chart ribbon tab.

Set up marker size using the Marker Size value editor. Default marker size is zero, the marker is not displayed.

NOTE. Value input is available in different measurement units. The editor input box shows values using measurement units that correspond to the current regional settings of the operating system.

To set up marker fill, set the required parameters in the Fill group:

Fill Type. Select fill type to use to fill markers in the drop-down list. To fill a marker with a color, select the Fill option, to use a pattern, select the Pattern option.
Color. Select marker background color in the drop-down palette, or click the Other button and select a new color in the advanced color palette.
Transparency. Select transparency of the marker background. A value of 100% means full transparency (marker background becomes invisible) and the value of 0% means full opacity. The value is set in the value editor.
Pattern. The group of parameters is available if the Pattern fill type is selected for the marker. Determine the following pattern parameters:

Type. Select the required marker pattern type in the drop-down list.
Color. Select color of marker background pattern in the drop-down palette, or click the Other button and select a new color in the advanced color palette.

To set up marker borders, set parameters in the Borders group:

Line Type. Select line type in the drop-down list.
Line Width. Select line width in the drop-down list. Selecting the Custom option opens the Line Width dialog box, where the user can select the required line width manually or by using a value editor.

NOTE. Value input is available in different measurement units but the input box always shows the value in points (1/72 inch).

Line Color. Select color for marker border line in the drop-down palette, or click the Other button and select a new color in the advanced color palette.

To display marker shadow, select the Shadow checkbox.

Then set up shadow offset along the category axis (X) and offset along the value axis (Y) using the value editors dX and dY respectively. In the drop-down palette select the required shadow color or select new color in the advanced palette opened by clicking the Other button.

After the settings are determined, the Sample area shows a marker formatted in accordance with the parameters determined on the tab. Check if the marker appearance corresponds to the expected result.
